1.) GET ON THE CALENDAR!

The Best Time to Book Your Senior Session

If you hear anything from this entire blog post, hear this: do not procrastinate on scheduling your high school senior photos. The minute your bell rings and school is out for the summer, contact me for a date. You do not need to have your session early on (although there are perks for that), but you should definitely be securing a spot on my calendar as soon as possible.

My calendar becomes increasingly wild towards September and October. If you prefer these months for your photos, make sure you’re securing those dates early on.

Did you perk up when I said the word ‘perk’ above? Good! I do offer incentives for seniors that have their sessions during the early months of June and July. This could mean a discounted rate or even some free digital images.

Because we live in Colorado and weather can be unpredictable, we do need to take this into consideration. I know I know- I hate the snow too. The earlier we get your senior session scheduled, then we don’t have to worry about you being cold or possibly snowed on later in the year!

2.) PICK A GREAT LOCATION

From Mountains to Urban

The most important part of your session, in my opinion, is the location you select. There are a million different spots that I offer that will meet your vision- I promise. No matter if you want tall buildings to give an urban vibe or tall grasses, I have you covered.

Urban

We’re heading to Downtown Denver, for sure. All over Denver offers various kinds of “urban”! Murals by local artists and graffiti walls are always a popular location that give a grunge vibe. If that’s what you’re wanting then we would go straight to RiNo (River North Arts District). Another area that I love is The Millennium Bridge off of 16th behind Union Station. I really like this area because it offers the city backdrop, tall buildings, and various types of backgrounds. A super cute spot that offers another “urban” type of area would be Downtown Boulder or Lafayette. Main streets offer a lot of charm and unique photo opportunities. I think the best time to use downtown for senior photos would be during the spring and summer months because it looks amazing down there with vining greenery, flourishing plants, and bright sunshine cutting through the buildings.

Nature

We live in a state that doesn’t have limited locations for natural outdoor backdrops. If you want the popular Flat Irons, we would head to Chautauqua. That location is often overused, so lucky for you, I have a toolbox full of spots that offer a similar look. South Mesa, Mt. Falcon, and college campuses are always a top favorite for Broomfield seniors.

Some factors to take into consideration for other locations would be photography permits. Denver Botanic Gardens is a stunning place shoot at, but requires you to get a permit which is around $100. Worth it in my opinion!

3.) WARDROBE IS IMPORTANT

I’ll Be Your Personal Stylist

Assisting you with your senior photo shoot clothes is one of my favorite parts of the whole experience. I love to make an inspo board for you based off of your location, favorite colors, and your ultimate style. In additon to picking your location, selecting your outfits is the second most important part. Some important factors to consider for both male and female sessions would be the location, and time of year. While having a photoshoot in an urban setting is fun, it would clash with a floral dress. You’re more than welcome to wear whatever you want no matter what, though.

Broomfield Senior Girls: Aim for three outfits.

  • A dress or a romper
  • Jeans with a cute plain top
  • Another pair of pants with a cute shirt

I recommend one of the shirts, dresses or rompers be white or cream, one other solid patterned top or dress, and a final solid colored top. By selecting patterns and solids makes for timeless photos that won’t become dated. You don’t want to regret your senior photos in twenty years because of poor outfit choices.

High School Senior Boys: Mix and match these items of clothing!

  • Jeans
  • Khaki colored jeans
  • Button up
  • Solid t-shirt

A good ol’ button up paired with some khaki colored jeans or chino pants are the best for senior photos. As with the girls, I always suggest a white top, and then a patterned shirt. This just gives some versatility to your images.

You are encouraged to bring your letterman’s jacket if you have one and any type of prop you’d like to incorporate. Popular items to bring are sports equipment, and my personal favorite- your puppies.

I highly suggest to avoid reds and pinks. These make color casts onto skin and it just simply isn’t flattering. However, if that’s your favorite color, you should definitely bring a red shirt. Avoid any logos, and large images on the front of t-shirts,

4.) GO BIG OR GO HOME!

Your Last Photos Should Be A Big Deal

I’ve been a Broomfield Senior Photographer for a long dang time. I know what you’re going to love and I know what your parents are going to love even more. These are not the photos that you should plan last minute and only keep to yourself. Plan on going big!

Investing in hiring a makeup artist to add some light natural makeup is always a first suggestion of mine. Use this as an opportunity to pamper yourself and make a day of it. I’m begging you to not wait until the day before your session to select your clothes. Start piecing together your outfits well before our session date so we know what will work and what won’t. Boys, make sure you book a haircut one to two days in advance.

Finally- think about what you want to do with your photos once your session is complete. How do you want to display and share them with friends and families? Most families opt for purchasing a leather heirloom album, and digital photos. I highly suggest not just keeping all of your photos in the cloud or on a hard drive. Create some art that you can pass down for future generations.
